Expertise - At a Glance

Formed after accruing multiple decades worth of experience in the hydrogen sector, HyEnergy® is a consultancy that specialises in uniting the hydrogen and energy communities together. We have developed an intricate understanding of all aspects of the renewables and hydrogen value chains and regularly help transfer our world class knowledge into organisations, institutions and communities to help them realise their potential for projects and products alike.

Our Expertise

Hydrogen valleys are large-scale deployments of hydrogen technologies in an integrated ecosystem approach featuring all the elements of the value chain – production, storage & distribution, and applications.

Through co-location of these technologies, alongside scale, it’s possible to significantly reduce the levelized cost of hydrogen via optimisation on a whole-systems basis. HyEnergy® helped develop and obtain funding for the world’s first hydrogen valley project HEAVENN – and are participating in the project through their Dutch subsidiary, HyEnergy® TransStore, which is developing the storage and distribution element of the hydrogen value chain. HyEnergy are also playing a significant role in Southern Europe’s first Hydrogen Island-based hydrogen valley – Green Hysland, located on Mallorca – where we helped to design and write the funding application for the project which obtained a €10m EU grant, as well as a further €50m from public and private co-funding. Within this project, HyEnegy are supporting the deployment of green hydrogen infrastructure and leading the development of businesses models and technology scale-up studies that will help to inform the project’s Hydrogen Roadmap for the Balearic Islands. Alongside these successes, HyEnergy also lead the development, consortium building, and funded proposal preparation for SH2AMROCK, Ireland’s first hydrogen valley, which was awarded funding and formally kicked off in early 2024.

If your region or organisation is planning to apply for or get involved in a Hydrogen Valley call, then HyEnergy can help you:

·        Funded proposal preparation – HyEnergy has experience and success writing applications for UK and EU funding for calls showcased through securing over €100million in funding including three previous hydrogen valley applications.

·        Project development/preparation – We excel in guiding clients through the development process to achieve excellent viable projects for hydrogen valley funding.

·        Consortium building – Hydrogen valleys require large consortiums of local and international partners across infrastructure and research to be successful. With an extensive dynamic network, we have the knowledge to develop cohesive and effective consortiums for your hydrogen valley including SMEs, large multi-national organisations, research & academia, and regional & national authorities.

·        Project and work-package management – Our team has experience managing projects and consortiums all the way from funding preparation to project completion across UK and EU geographies. This includes management of overall projects and work packages.

·        Finance/budgeting – HyEnergy have worked on over 20 projects ranging in sizes, infrastructure and man hours, giving us experience in budgeting and managing finance for a variety of funding amounts. We readily use this expertise and past experience to develop budgets for our hydrogen valleys projects.

·      Partnerships/joint venture – HyEnergy is open to looking for exciting and innovative projects to open up new opportunities and markets through collaboration

H2ITION is HyEnergy’s newly branded hydrogen training course, designed to directly disseminate the company’s 60 years of industry experience into companies both aspiring to start their journeys in hydrogen, and those looking to increase their presence across the sector. HyEnergy has previous success in training private clients and with recent demand, have now looked to expand and build upon this service.

As such, the H2ITION course takes organisations right from the very fundamentals to advanced concepts, with participants gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to capitalise on opportunities within the ever-growing hydrogen market. This includes deep dives into topics across the hydrogen value chain – production, storage & distribution, and end-uses – as well as national & international policy, market analysis, and health & safety. Alongside training modules, participants will also gain access with information packs, site visits, and an expansive network to help realise their hydrogen goals.

However, unlike other hydrogen training programs, H2ITION can be tailored to your needs based on your company size, goals, location and hydrogen experience. Not only in terms of the content covered, but also delivery styles with both intensive in-person and weekly online options available.

When companies become active in the hydrogen market, they tend to be innovation or technology driven. This means that, occasionally, they do not have the sufficient resources available to ensure their product is being positioned as efficiently and successfully as possible within the market. HyEnergy® have helped companies including manufacturers of electrolysers, pressure vessels, and even EPC contractors to understand their position in the hydrogen sector through commercial assessment and market consultation/representation.

As part of these activities, HyEnergy readily develop in-depth market studies, technology reviews, roadmaps, and strategies covering the core focuses of our clients – whether they be technologies, national/international policy, market updates, or dedicated research & development activities – to help optimise their approach to the sector.

HyEnergy regularly combines this knowhow, alongside its considerable network, to develop specialised models of these core customers. Previous examples include evaluating hydrogen production technologies and site configurations, hydrogen distribution technology and operational optimisation, liquid hydrogen supply and demand projections, revenue models, and carbon emissions reduction quantification.

This expertise is readily available to our customers via defined work programme or retainer style agreements.  Allowing our customers to focus on their areas of hydrogen expertise.

With any hydrogen project, there is an enormous amount of data that is generated. From numbers of miles driven in a fuel cell bus per year, or amount of hydrogen moved through a pipeline from storage to refuelling station. Every step in the hydrogen value chain produces key data points that can be collated and analysed.

At HyEnergy®, we have experience in making sure all partners of a project are utilising and understanding this data. In order to both enhance the wins and to avoid failures in the future. As an example, one of our roles in the HEAVENN project sees us communicating with partners to collate any data points they have been collecting in their operations. We then analyse this data and produce reports on the finding to help better the project and provide future learnings for other hydrogen valleys.
